How is it? How is the OS?

I will no longer be getting this phone because i decided to buy a Samsung Omnia instead after my Viewty. But i would like to hear from the people that have gotten the Renoir.

Incredible phone, this isn't one of the LG slip-up models like the U8120 (the successor u8138 being a win), u880 (the successor u890 being a win) and u400, this is a slick and swift device, this was my first touchscreen phone also, so I was worried it would be too hard to operate but not at all! the onscreen buttons are nice and big.

What I like about this also is that you can still use the phone without the sim, bar any features that require information stored on it.
So years from now when things have advanced more, I'll still be able to use the radio, camera and everything else as an old-school funky PDA even if I can't call people on it (if a replacement for the SIM comes out and SIM is no longer supported)

http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_kc910_renoir-2495.php
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i900_omnia-2422.php

If you open both these pages you can compare the two

Things to note on the Renoir specs on that page in regards to what the Omnia has listed:
*The Renoir also has handwriting recognition, and the auto screen rotate when you turn it sideways, I don't know what the optical track pad is so I can't comment there, but you can run your finger/stylus across the screen to go through photos etc.
*I haven't yet found the ringtone composer on my Renoir, and I believe it doesn't have one
*The Renoir browser has an RSS reader too
*The Renoir can view (not sure about modifying) excel, powerpoint, word, text and pdf files as well as swfs and svgs.

I'm not sure about java games how to tell the difference, but I do know I can download games direct from the service provider through an option in the phone menu that takes me to their special website for phone accessibility.

The Renoir of course has a 8mpx camera + superior Xenon flash as opposed to the 5mpx + LED flash on the omnia, and the Renoir has the Dolby audio option while playing music only (not while playing videos or radio though etc).

Any other minor things you would like to know such as being able to set images for main screen/contacts#/incomingcall*/outgoingcall*/startup*/shutdown* just ask!

*can set gifs, the smaller the faster they play       #untested with gifs

Hope you choose the Renoir, I got this phone knowing only the basics of what was listed and what I assumed/expected and discovered a whole bunch of features on top of that (my expectations built on my previous phone being the u890 released about 3 years ago)

Gearu - Any idea if the gps only works with google maps or is there a way to install a 3rd party app such as tomtom or something? Also, I haven't seen a way of renaming any photo's taken with the superb camera - is there a way? All help greatly appreciated....

You have to select rename whilst looking at the entire list/grid of all your photos, same with moving and copying them, odd.
And on a side note you can only change to the other audio "visualization" when you play your music through the Music area in  Dice>Entertainment>Music   menu tree

I'm researching it, but being such a new phone there really isn't any information on how to use the GPS apart from the same features/review/summary that is on every website in my search results, and this is the only LG Renoir forum/community as far as I could tell that's why I'm here hehe
I currently believe we only have google maps.

But I Found this:
http://www.tomtom.com/products/features.php?ID=281&Category=2&Lid=1

Might work, the Renoir isn't listed as compatible but it might be too new to be so.

Just came across part of a summary:

Phone Book Capacity
- Shared memory
Vibrating Alert
- Yes
Voice-Activated Dialing
- Yes
Ring Tones
- Polyphonic, MP3

Um, I don't suppose you know how to use the voice activated dialling?.....

-----edit

This is interesting! :

Although the Renoir possesses too many features to discuss in detail, it is worth mentioning the device’s navigation functionality. The Renoir features built-in GPS, enables A-GPS and offers Google Maps as standard. However, we noticed that when using the handset with Orange, the Google Maps application (usually found in utilities) had disappeared. This is probably because the operators will be offering their own sat nav application subscription service. It is worth checking to see if your operator blocks Google Maps, as ours did.

I don't really know what to make of that, plus operators can block phone features?

----EDIT 2!!!!!!

Just found these mobile sat nav applications!
http://www.nav4all.com/site2/www.nav4all.com/enguk/index.php    Not sure if this works with renoir
http://www.amazegps.com/welcome.php?language=au&referrer=298     Renoir is supported

I have installed the 2nd one on my Renni but I'm at home and I haven't got it to lock onto my location yet, which is something google maps couldn't do, but when I was driving Google maps worked fine so I'll test it later.

cheers for that gearu!!! Don't know anything about the voice dialling yet but I'll be able to have a better play with the phone over the weekend, if I find anything i'll post straight away...

And yes, operators can block phone features, e.g. Vodafone UK replace the google panel with one of their own on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

I tried it again recently and it was locked on to my location at home (GPS doesn't work well, if at all, in buildings/undergound etc), it has voices and all telling you where to go (hehe) you just key in some address parameters and it should list a bunch of matches, then you choose one and away you go, still haven't tested it driving, but hopefully it will update location fast.

You gotta open the menu on the bottom left and choose 'center on GPS'
Mine always shows me a view of a different city too when it starts up.

Waiting for a reply from LG in regards to firmware upgrades, I sent them an encouraging email covering the elements they should look into improving and how LG will benefit from doing so.

Yeah it does, but as you load the areas imagery, you see a data amount in the top right for each batch of imagery for what you see on the screen so that helps, you if you try to move the map after each bit of area loads you may use around 800kb-1500kb per minute, no 2 areas' imagery have the same kb amount and then there's the different zoomed in/more detailed images to vary the amounts even more, but still within the 800kb-1500kb per minute range in my experience, how long would you really use it for?

I think if you hook into an internet connection using Wi-Fi it would be free, but I don't know anything about that or how google maps would know which connection to use, your internet or wifi bootleg internet.

hmm not sure, I just tried taking a picture with geo tagging enabled and in the file info it says "Location: no" as one of the attributes (even while not using the phone internet through PC), and for jogging buddy I see the satellite thing moving left and right but thats it.
Neither element asked me for permission to access the internet, so maybe it doesn't use data bandwidth, under the theory that the only reason the google maps and other GPS systems ask for internet access is so they can grab photo data and local road 'cartoon' image mapping, this could also be the reason that there is a point to downloading and saving satellite map images to a mobile device.
